The simulator is located in the entrance hall of the HES-SO Valais-Wallis in Sion.
It consists of a 5 x 6 metre vibrating table that can accommodate up to 20 people. This platform, which can move in three planes (X, Y and torsion), is operated by hydraulic cylinders and is supported by air bearings which in turn rest on marble plates. A movable frame serves as a counterweight to cushion the vibrations induced by the moving table in the building. The simulator features a multimedia display to make the whole experience even more real.
This simulator is controlled by two PACs (Programmable Automation Controller) coded in the LabVIEW graphical programming language.
The PACs combine the robustness of a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) with the functions of a PC in an open and flexible software architecture. The two PACs, located in the control cabinet of the simulator, contain a head module with a processor and an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) for processing fast tasks, and is connected to the network by Ethernet.
